I Spent 1000 Silver on Destiny 2’s Solstice Event Card and All I Got Was This Glowing Armor

Destiny 2's Solstice event and upgradeable Solstice armor mix festive rewards with a costly Event Card grind—fun, flashy, and frustrating.

I’m a simple Guardian. I see a glowing armor set, I hear a tiny voice whisper just one more Bonfire Bash, and suddenly my entire evening has evaporated like a Phalanx’s shield under a Gjallarhorn rocket. Back in July 2022, Destiny 2’s Solstice event arrived on July 19 with new cosmetics and a new set of upgradeable armor that promised I could re-roll my stats. In 2026, I can confirm that promise was both a gift and a trap. Mostly a trap with confetti.

The event used to be called Solstice of Heroes. That name sounded noble. Then Bungie dropped the “of Heroes” and added an Event Card, which is a polite way of saying “here is a new place for your money to live.” The Event Card offered Event Challenges. Those were like Seasonal Challenges, except instead of Bright Dust, they handed out Shaders, Emblems, and other gear. They also gave Event Tickets, a new currency that could be traded for cosmetic rewards.

Sounds great, right? Well, hold your Sparrow. The good stuff was locked behind upgrading the Event Card for 1000 Silver. That is about $10. If you paid, you instantly got an Exotic Emote, a Ghost Shell, and a Shader. The remaining cosmetic rewards, including an Emote, two Ghost Holos, an Exotic Ship, and a Transmat Effect, became unlockable with tickets. So yes, I paid real money to earn the privilege of grinding fake tickets for a holographic ghost that follows me around and judges my fashion choices.

I did it anyway. I am not proud. I am also not sorry.

Here is a quick breakdown of the 2022 Solstice economy, because I like to stare at my mistakes in table form:

Thing Cost My reaction
Event Card upgrade 1000 Silver, about $10 😬
Instant rewards Exotic Emote, Ghost Shell, Shader 🤑
Ticket rewards Emote, two Ghost Holos, Exotic Ship, Transmat Effect 😭
Armor glow Kindling and patience ✨
My dignity Non-refundable 💀

Then there was the armor. Oh, the armor. Bungie said the main drive for the new Solstice armor was to make it upgradeable and re-rollable so Guardians could grind for the stat roll they desired. That sentence is beautiful in the same way a mousetrap is beautiful. You see the cheese. You know the cheese is a lie. You step forward anyway.

The loop worked like this. First, I completed activities to earn Silver Leaves. Then I turned those Silver Leaves into Silver Ash by completing the new Bonfire Bash activity in the European Aerial Zone. Then I used that Silver Ash to re-roll the Solstice Armor on the armor mod screen. If that sounds like doing chores for a robot that hates you, congratulations, you understand Destiny 2.

But wait, there was more. Upgrading the armor required Kindling, earned from completing Solstice Event Challenges. Kindling could upgrade an armor’s stat potential up to three times. Once fully upgraded, the armor glowed with my Guardian’s subclass. It also gained the ability to re-roll with a particular stat as its focus. That part was genuinely cool. I could chase Discipline, Recovery, or whatever stat was meta that week, and my armor would glow like a neon sign that said “I have made questionable life choices.”

And here is the generous bit: once an armor piece was fully upgraded, it was upgraded for every new armor drop in that slot, per class. That meant my Warlock, Titan, and Hunter could all benefit without me losing my mind three separate times. As with previous years, there was also a new set of Solstice armor ornaments that glowed and could be purchased for Silver or Bright Dust. Because of course there was.

The 2022 Solstice was not just a grind. It was a personality test. Did I want to look cool? Yes. Did I want to save my Bright Dust? Also yes. Did I want to spend 1000 Silver on an Event Card so I could then grind tickets for a Transmat Effect I would forget to equip? Apparently, yes. And I would do it again. I will always do it again.

In 2026, looking back, the 2022 Solstice feels like a turning point. It was the moment Destiny 2 events started feeling like a store with a minigame attached. I still love the glow. I still love Bonfire Bash. I still hate that my first reaction to “new cosmetics” is to check my bank account and sigh. But the armor re-roll system was a genuinely good idea, and I wish more events had stolen it.

Would I recommend it? That depends. Do you enjoy turning Silver Leaves into Silver Ash, then turning Silver Ash into disappointment, then turning disappointment into a perfectly rolled helmet? If yes, welcome home. If no, stay strong. The Solstice will come again. The glow will call. The Event Card will whisper. And your wallet will answer before your brain can stop it.

Final verdict: 10/10 for the glow, 3/10 for the paywall, 0/10 for my impulse control. The 2022 Solstice event arrived on July 19, and in 2026, I am still glowing. My Ghost is disappointed in me. My wallet is crying. My armor is beautiful. That is basically the Destiny 2 experience in one sentence.
